About

This site is where I’ll be sharing my journey as I walk across England—documenting the highs, the blisters, the views, and everything in between—while raising funds for a cause close to my heart.

So… why me, why now, and why do this?

I’ve always loved walking and getting out into the great outdoors. For a while now, I’ve had the incredible opportunity—thanks to the generous sabbatical policy at my workplace—to take two months off. It’s been sitting there, waiting for the right idea. (Much to the disbelief of my colleagues: “Steve, you STILL haven’t taken it?!”)

Well, The Big Plod is that idea. Over two months, I’ll be taking on four long-distance trails:

The Coast to Coast Walk, The Lyke Wake Walk, The Limestone Way and The Cotswold Way.

Each trail offers something unique, from sweeping coastlines to rugged moorlands and rolling countryside, to challenging single-day hikes. Together, they form a personal adventure I’ve been dreaming about for years.

But this journey isn’t just about the miles—it’s about meaning. It’s about reconnecting with nature, taking a step back from the busyness of life, and doing something that matters to me. I want to raise funds for a cause that has touched our family, and I want my kids—Sophie and George—to be proud of what their Dad is doing.

So whether you’re here to follow along, chip in with support, or just curious about what makes someone voluntarily walk hundreds of miles for fun—welcome. I’m glad you’re here.
