C2C Day Two: Cleator to Ennerdale Bridge

Posted on Sunday, 15 June 2025

A shorter walk today, just under six miles, but a good one for getting into the rhythm of things. After a solid hotel breakfast, I packed up and headed off, starting to feel like I’m getting into the groove of the coast-to-coast life—wake up, walk, rest, repeat.

Breakfast at Ennerdale Country House Hotel

Just outside of Cleator, I met Richard, a retired environmentalist walking the route. We ended up walking the whole stretch together, and it turned out to be one of those great trail conversations—talking about his work, his reasons for doing the walk, and sharing stories. I’d expected to power through today quickly, but his company slowed the pace and made the day more interesting.

Despite a sign saying the trail over Dent Fell was closed, we took a bit of a calculated risk—it was Sunday, and we figured the forestry crews wouldn’t be around. Luckily, the gamble paid off. We went over the top, and while the views were mostly lost in the mist and rain, it still felt good to stay true to the route.

From there, we followed the path through Nanny Catch, a lovely little valley with a babbling stream running alongside the trail. Even with the weather closing in, it had a calm, tucked-away feel to it—one of those hidden corners that quietly makes the day.

Now at the Fox and Hounds in Ennerdale Bridge. Managed to sneak in a late lunch (thank you to the bar lady for that one) and I’m onto my second pint. A few mild muscle aches, but nothing to worry about—just the kind that remind you you’ve done something good. Bit of a wet finish though, so the next hour’s dedicated to hanging everything up to dry in true British hiking fashion.

Well .. it would be rude not to...

Onward tomorrow and the steep ascent that is Hay Stacks and beyond!!
